The home secretary Alan Johnson has said that he sacked Professor David Nutt, the government's chief drugs adviser, because he crossed the line between giving advice and campaigning for a policy.

Newsnight's Science Editor, Susan Watts has been casting a scientific eye over a very bad-tempered spat.
