Afghan election saga draws to a close with Karzai win

Two hundred and twenty-four service personnel have now been killed in Afghanistan since 2001. Their priority this year was to ensure that meaningful elections could happen. In the event, the election process ground to a halt, with Hamid Karzai declared the elected president after his sole challenger, Dr Abdullah Abdullah, pulled out of the race.
