In California, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has axed billions of dollars from public services, just to keep the state finances afloat.

Rocked by recession and crippled by a bankrupt political system, David Grossman wonders if the Californian dream is still affordable and asks if the situation there can inform us about the choices Britain is going to have to make?
