Home Office response to Newsnight film

Salam Pax, the Baghdad Blogger, has been investigating the situation of Iraqi asylum seekers in the UK. His film is being broadcast on Newsnight on Thursday 10 July.

In response to the report the Home Office issued this statement:

Over 3,300 Iraqis returned home voluntarily between 2000 and 2007.

We currently enforce removals to the Kurdistan Regional Government controlled area of Northern Iraq which does not include Kirkuk or Mosul.

We do not enforce return unless we are satisfied that it is safe to do so.

We do not accept that it is unsafe for Iraqis to return home. Voluntary returns are possible to all parts of Iraq and Iraqi failed asylum seekers may return home voluntarily, with the assistance of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
