As Newsnight launches 10 Days to War - a series of mini-films dramatising the build up to the Iraq war with Kenneth Branagh as Colonel Tim Collins - we turn the clock back to March 1988.

Wesley Kerr reports on Branagh's increasing directing and theatrical managerial skills as he hands Judi Dench her directorial debut.

Norwegian diplomat Arne Treholt was convicted of spying for the Soviets and Iraqis and was jailed from 1985 until being pardoned in 1992. Donald MacCormick reports on the trial and speaks to a British general who knew Treholt.

FEBRUARY 1985
Bishop of Durham David Jenkins

If you thought the Archbishop of Canterbury/Sharia law row had caused a rift in the church, back in 1985 the Bishop of Durham questioned the virgin birth. John Tusa reports and chairs a lively ecumenical debate with two prominent members of the Church of England.

FEBRUARY 1985
Former President Jimmy Carter

Clinton v Obama may be nasty but back in February 1980, Charles Wheeler reported from Maine on Ted Kennedy's run for the White House. Lagging in the polls and dogged by Chappaquidick, Kennedy launched a vitriolic attack on fellow Democrat and incumbent president Jimmy Carter.
