Nomination: George nominated having reporter Brian Walker at the dock gates in Gdansk during the shipyard and miners strike in 1980.

It was first broadcast on 18 August 1980.

George says: "One of the things I was most pleased with in the early days was having a reporter at the dock gates in Gdansk when the shipyard and the miners went on strike.

"It wasn't the end of the Cold War but it was the beginning of the end.

"I can't remember the precise date or where all the other news channels were pointing their cameras that day; but true to our philosophy of looking for stories that no one else was touching, we had a reporter called Brian Walker on the scene.

"His report was taken by most of the networks that day."

George Carey is Director of Programmes for the Television Corporation which includes the independents Mentorn, Sunset + Vine and Folio.

He started his career with BBC News. As well as launching Newsnight, he was also Editor of Panorama, head of BBC operations in North America and a producer in the documentaries department.

He started his own company in 1988. Since then, he has been the executive producer of Question Time and several award-winning documentaries, like The Valley, The Unforgiving, Babitsky's War and Terror in Moscow. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Television Society.
