Wainwright back to skipper Scots

Rob Wainwright has been recalled as Scotland's captain for their eight-match tour of Australia and Fiji.

The Dundee High flanker lost the skipper's role to Newcastle's Gary Armstrong for the Scots' disastrous Five Nations campaign.

Scrum-half Armstrong last week said he wanted a rest from international rugby and will stay at home.

British Lion Wainwright got the captain's job ahead of Bath's Andy Nicol, who has also led his country this season.

"It is always a huge honour for me to captain the side and with Gary not going it was nice to step in again," said Wainwright.

Scotland's 35-man squad flies out on May 18 for a Test against Fiji, then seven games Down Under, including two Tests against the Wallabies.

Coach Jim Telfer named 33 players on Monday. Two more will be added to the party.

Included is New Zealand-born flanker Gordon Simpson who has played only a handful of games for Kirkcaldy.

Veteran prop Peter Wright is also in the squad. But there is no place for Scott Hastings.

Armstrong's Newcastle teammates Doddie Weir, Alan Tait, George Graham and Peter Walton have also said they are unavailable.
