Home Secretary Announces Reforms

BBC Radio 4's Law in Action will be broadcast on Friday, 29 October, 2004 at 1600 BST.

Law in Action looked at two reforms announced by the Home Secretary, David Blunkett, this week:

Murder
The Home Secretary announced that the Home Office will begin a review of the law on murder in the New Year. The announcement follows a partial review conducted by the Law Commission.

William Clegg QC and Graham Virgo, a reader in English law from the University of Cambridge discuss how the law might be reformed.

Forced Marriage
Every year there are around 400 reported cases of forced marriage - where parents take their children abroad to marry under duress. The government has launched a consultation over whether on not forcing someone to marry should be a criminal offence.

Presenter Clive Coleman talks to Teertha Gupta, a barrister who has specialised in dealing with forced marriage cases.
