A documentary film called 'Sex, Death and the Gods' explores the age-old Indian practice of devadasi.

The devadasi are married to a deity in childhood and traditionally had a particular status in their community.

However, over recent years the practice has degenerated so women are being exploited in the sex industry

Although it has been declared illegal for over sixty years in parts of southern India the practice continues.

Mishal Husain spoke to the director Beeban Kidron and Jay Lakhani from the Hindu Academy about the practice.
