Bahrain's Minister of Justice and Islamic Affairs Khalid Bin Ali Al-Khalifa says he hopes a political activist sentenced to life imprisonment will give up his hunger strike.

Tensions have been rising over the worsening condition of Abdulhadi al-Khawaja who is refusing food to protest against the sentence he received from a military court in June for allegedly plotting against the state.

The minister told Stephen Sackur the government was providing optimal health care to Mr al-Khawaji.
