How many times more should the boss of a company be paid than someone on the shop floor? In the case of the John Lewis Partnership - a chain of department stores owned by its employees - it is fixed at 75 to one.
The Partnership's managing director Andy Street says this compares favourably with many FTSE 100 companies where the gap is wider and the issue of executive pay has reached a critical point.
