'I got a gun... and tried to kill him'

More than anything else, the late Nina Simone wanted to be a classical pianist.

As a child and young performer she says the opportunities were just not there for a black woman, so she turned to her beloved jazz. Her inimitable voice and style won her a dedicated following across many decades.

Renowned for an often fickle approach to performing - which included pulling out of concerts at short notice - she was nevertheless one of the most enduring talents in jazz.

She talked to Tim Sebastian in March 1999 about love, music and self defence.

In this clip she talks about how she tried to shoot someone who stole her royalties.
