In a HARDtalk interview broadcast on 6th July 2009, Jonathan Charles talks to the successful barrister, Constance Briscoe.

‘Ugly' is the title of Constance Briscoe's bestselling memoir.

It could also describe her childhood, as she was abused mentally and physically by her mother.

She decided to make her story public, despite her public role as a barrister and part time judge.

And even though it led to her mother bringing a libel case against her in a British court, which was unsuccessful.

She went public, she says, because she hopes that by giving an account of her own experience she will highlight the issues facing troubled families.
