In a HARDtalk interview originally broadcast on 12th March 2009, Stephen Sackur talks to the Oscar winning Actress, Charlize Theron.

Plenty of Hollywood's biggest female stars have railed against the obsession with youth and beauty but Charlize Theron has refused to let her work be defined by either.

She won an Oscar playing a ruthless serial killer and has more recently become a UN Goodwill Ambassador raising awareness about violence against women.

She continues to play complex women confronting their inner demons.

Is that a coincidence or part of who she is?

Charlize Theron talks to Stephen Sackur.

This interview will be shown on BBC World News at 0430, 0930, 1430, 1830 (except Middle East and South Asia) and 2130 GMT

HARDtalk is also broadcast on the BBC News channel at 04:30 & 23:30 GMT
