In a HARDtalk programme broadcast on 21st October, Stephen Sackur talks to the Secretary Treasurer of the AFL-CIO, Richard Trumka.

As America prepares to go to the polls, the current financial crisis is hitting working families hard.

To win over traditional blue-collar voters, Barack Obama must convince them that he can fix the economy and save jobs.

But will even that be enough?

Richard Trumka is the secretary treasurer of the AFL-CIO, the largest federation of trade unions in the US.

Earlier this year he gave a passionate speech calling on the labour movement to reject the politics of race in order to elect Obama to the White House.

Stephen Sackur asks Richard Trumka if Obama is winning the trust -- and the votes -- of working America.

HARDtalk is broadcast on BBC World News at 03:30 GMT, 08:30 GMT, 14:30 GMT, 20:30 GMT and 22:30 GMT

HARDtalk can also be seen on BBC News at 04:30 BST & 23:30 BST
