Gilberto Gil, musician and Brazilian Minister of Culture
|
In a HARDtalk interview first shown on 17th April 2008, Stephen Sackur spoke to the musician and Brazilian Culture Minister, Gilberto Gil.
Many musicians dabble in politics, but Gilberto Gil has taken it further than most.
In late 1960s Brazil, he was at the heart of the Tropicalia movement; a group of musicians and artists who dared to challenge the military dictatorship.
Gil was imprisoned and then exiled to London, where he discovered reggae and started to embrace African culture.
Today he's Minister of Culture in the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
HARDtalk is broadcast on BBC World News at 03:30 GMT, 08:30 GMT, 14:30 GMT, 20:30 GMT and 22:30 GMT.
Hardtalk can also be seen on BBC News at 04:30 & 23:30.
