In a HardTalk interview first broadcast on 28 August 2007, Jonathan Charles speaks to the imam of the Al-Tawhid Mosque, Dr Usama Hasan.

He's on the frontline of the intellectual battle against Muslim extremism.

As a young man he fought in Afghanistan, against the Russian occupation.

But now he's preaching moderation.

Dr Usama Hasan is one of the Imams that the British government hopes will help them win "hearts and minds" in the fight against global terrorism.

Jonathan Charles asks him if he can really help persuade British Muslims to reject the message of the small minority of extremists who promote violence and hate in the name of Islam.

HARDtalk can be seen on BBC World at 03:30h GMT (not Asia), 08:30h GMT, 14:30h GMT, 20:30h GMT, 23:30h GMT (not Asia)

It can also be seen on BBC News 24 at 0430 and 2330.
