In a Hardtalk Extra programme broadcast on Friday 20th July, Gavin Esler talked to the British author Hari Kunzru.

Hari Kunzru is one of the most celebrated young authors in Britain today.

He first came to attention five years ago with his debut novel The Illusionist.

Along with Monica Ali, Andrea Levy and Zadie Smith, he is part of a new generation of British authors who have family roots in former British colonies, and can offer a fresh take on what it means to be British.

Hari Kunzru talks to Gavin Esler about the fate of multiculturalism in Britain, and the importance of freedom of speech for writers.

HARDtalk Extra can be seen on BBC World at 0330 GMT, 0830 GMT, 1430 GMT, and 1830 GMT.

It can also be seen on BBC News 24 at 04:30 and 23:30.
