Kiran Desai's The Inheritance of Loss won the Booker Prize in 2006
In a Hardtalk Extra programme broadcast on Friday 1 June, Gavin Esler talked to Kiran Desai, the youngest woman to win the Booker Prize for literature.

Kiran Desai exploded onto the world literary scene as if from nowhere, winning the Booker Prize for fiction with her novel The Inheritance of Loss.

A truly global citizen she grew up in India, Great Britain and America.

Gavin Esler asks her how far her experiences of migration in her childhood influenced her writing.

And was it a hindrance or a benefit, being the daughter of a literary legend like Anita Desai?

HARDtalk Extra can be seen on BBC World at 0330 GMT, 0830 GMT, 1430 GMT, and 1830 GMT.

It can also be seen on BBC News 24 at 04:30 and 23:30.
