Hugh Masekela was an exile from South Africa for over 30 years
In a Hardtalk Extra programme broadcast on Friday 11 May, Gavin Esler talked to one of South Africa's most successful musicians, Hugh Masekela.

Hugh Masekela is one of Africa's most celebrated musicians.

He left South Africa in 1960 after the Sharpville massacre, and carved out a successful career in the USA under the patronage of Harry Belafonte, going on to play with stars like Marvin Gaye, Jimi Hendrix and The Byrds.

After a thirty year exile, he returned to South Africa when Nelson Mandela was released.

He tells Gavin Esler why he wants to see African people controlling their own music business, and how his country is beginning to overcome the stigma attached to AIDS.

HARDtalk Extra can be seen on BBC World at 0330 GMT, 0830 GMT, 1430 GMT, and 1830 GMT.

It can also be seen on BBC News 24 at 04:30 and 23:30.
