In a Hardtalk Extra programme broadcast on Friday 17th November, Razia Iqbal talks to the Scottish novelist Alexander McCall Smith, a former professor of medical law whose novels have captured the imagination of a global audience.

Alexander McCall Smith's books have become an international publishing phenomenon, selling more than fifteen million copies in over thirty languages, including a huge following now in the United States.

All this is very unusual for an Edinburgh lawyer who only found acclaim as a writer in his fifties.

His success is all down to the exploits of a lady private detective in Botswana, the central character of his Number One Ladies Detective Agency.

He explains to Razia Iqbal why he is drawn to write from the perspective of an African woman.

HARDtalk Extra can be seen on BBC World at 0330 GMT, 0830 GMT, 1430 GMT, 1830 GMT, 2330 GMT.

It can also be seen on BBC News 24 at 04:30 and 23:30.
