Hardtalk Extra caught up with Alan Alda at the Hay Festival in Wales
In a Hardtalk Extra programme broadcast on Friday 3 November, Gavin Esler talks to Alan Alda, one of America's most successful actors.


Alan Alda is an icon of modern American television.

He became known around the world in the 1970s as Hawkeye Pierce in the US wartime comedy series MASH.

More recently, he has captured the imagination of a new generation of viewers in The West Wing.

In between he has worked with film directors like Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese.

In a candid interview, he talks to Gavin Esler about his formative years spent dealing with his mother¿s mental illness, and his first stage role: aged just six months.
