In a Hardtalk Extra programme broadcast on Monday 2nd October, Noel Thompson spoke to one of Bollywood's veteran stars, Shabana Azmi.

Shabana Azmi is a star of both art house and mainstream Indian cinema.

She first came to attention thirty years ago, challenging Bollywood conventions by playing strong-willed, independent women in films like Arth and Nishant.

Appointed for a term to India's upper house of parliament, she he has also played a prominent role in public life.

She tells Noel Thompson why she feels it is important for moderate Muslims like herself to make their voices heard, and why Bollywood films can help heal India's historic differences with Pakistan.

HARDtalk Extra can be seen on BBC World at 0330 GMT, 0830 GMT, 1430 GMT, 1830 GMT, 2330 GMT.

It can also be seen on BBC News 24 at 04:30 and 23:30.
