Gazprom's plans for expansion stretch beyond Europe.
Stephen Sackur talks to Alexander Medvedev, the deputy chairman of the Russian energy giant, Gazprom.
The Russian company Gazprom is the largest producer of natural gas, and has ambitions to expand its international markets to China and North America, as well as increasing its market share in Europe.
But the stand-off with Ukraine over the Christmas period, which resulted in Gazprom shutting off the gas supply to Ukraine and affected supplies to Europe, set off political alarm bells and focussed government minds on "energy security".
Now Gazprom is involved in another political row with the EU over greater access to European markets.
Gazprom's deputy chairman, Alexander Medvedev, talks to Stephen Sackur.
