Jose Carreras - Opera Star

Over 800 million watched the Three Tenors during the 1990 World Cup
In a HardTalk Extra interview screened on 27th January, Gavin Esler speaks to opera sensation Jose Carreras, about his love of singing, and football.

At eleven years old, he performed in Spain's top opera house.

Now, as one of the Three Tenors, Jose Carreras is a global superstar.

But a painful battle with leukaemia helped him to realise that such fabulous success comes at a price.

He talks to Gavin Esler about how his illness made him treasure his voice and his life - and how he yearns to see a team from his native Catalonia take part in football's World Cup

HARDtalk Extra can be seen on BBC World at 0430 GMT, 0830 GMT, 1130 GMT, 1530 GMT, 1930 GMT, 0030 GMT.

It can also be seen on BBC News 24 at 04:30 and 23:30.
