Attempts to isolate the military junta in Myanmar, still known as Burma - led by the United States - have had little impact on the human rights situation there.
Nor has the Asian policy of engagement made much difference; the country is desperately poor and riven with ethnic conflicts and the United Nations' relationship with Rangoon remains difficult.
