DRC: The prospect for peace
Baroness Amos is the British Foreign office minister with responsibility for Africa and the Caribbean.
Born in Guyana, she has said that the problems facing Africa represent "our greatest challenge as a world community". Since 1998 war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has pitted the government forces, supported by Angola, Namibia and Zimbabwe, against rebels backed by Uganda and Rwanda. It is also estimated that the four year conflict has claimed an estimated 3 million lives. Baroness Amos told Tim Sebastian: "The DRC is a country that really needs to be sorted out. "If we are able to do that as an international community, the implications for Africa would be phenomenal. We're talking about 90 million people, a resource rich county." Tim Sebastian asks what more can be done to bring peace to the region. The interview can be watched in full on Tuesday 8 October on BBC World and BBC News 24 at the following times: BBC News 24 (times shown in BST) 0430, repeated 2230 BBC World (times shown in GMT) 0330, repeated 0830, 1130, 1530, 1830, 2330
