How necessary are blood transfusions?
Ever since World War Two, blood transfusions have been praised as life saving treatments, especially for people who have lost a great deal of blood in accidents.

But how useful are they for other conditions?

Lesley Curwen investigates growing concerns that many are unnecessary and could do more harm than good to patients.

She lifts the lid on a continuing debate among doctors and academics over the benefits of this form of treatment.
