First broadcast November 2007
The third part of a four part series in which Maurice Walsh discovers why globalisation and the black market have drastically undermined governments' ability to generate revenue in the form of tax.
Part 3: Tax Havens
Listen to the programme
Maurice Walsh looks at how countries are under pressure to lower taxes to attract increasingly mobile investment.
He visits Jersey and other tax havens and talks to residents there who complain that the cost of living is too high on the island.
He also goes to southern Ireland while Jersey has attracted investment capital with low tax rates. In the last fifteen years the Republic of Ireland has slashed taxes on business profits to bring in multinational companies and create a boom. But can this boom last?
