Darfur has diverted attention from Southern Sudan, now emerging from civil war. Mike Wooldridge investigates its hopes for peace.

Southern Sudan has emerged from a 21-year conflict with a semi-autonomous government a hope of lasting peace.

However, with widespread littering of mines, millions of displaced people, and an education and health structure destroyed by war, the South is building from scratch and its future remains far from secure.

Half way through the six year transition period leading up to the referendum that will determine whether or not the South eventually becomes independent from the North, Mike Wooldridge takes stock of progress.
