The Falklands and the White House
First broadcast April 2007

A stylized trace of the Falklands on an Argentine memorial with the White House peering through.

April 2007 marks the 25th anniversary of the Falklands war. In this landmark programme Peter Snow uncovers the battle that took place in Washington, and offers a truly authoritative account of the decisive role played by the United States in the conflict.

The BBC reveals previously unheard, archive interviews with the key players in Washington and Capitol Hill at the time. It will ask whether Britain could have triumphed without U.S. assistance and we'll hear how the British government at the time deliberately suppressed the importance of the American contribution.

How sympathetic was Reagan personally to the British position? The problem for the UK was the lack of ill-will towards Argentina in the upper echelons of Washington.

The Reagan administration had spent a great deal of effort cultivating the then new Argentine dictator General Galtieri. Here was a South American leader who might fall in behind US policy in the region, with El Salvador being the key issue for for many on Capitol Hill.

Eventually America formally declared American support for Britain. But behind the scenes, the struggle was far from over.
