Montecello in Virginia, USA

Every nation offers clues about the way they see themselves in the way they preserve their historic buildings and cherished artefacts.

In this four-part Heritage series Malcolm Billings explores the archaeology of patriotism in the USA.

He looks at the places, events and objects that Americans hold dear. And asks how these influence the way they show affection for their nation.

Part Three: Buildings and Personalities

Whether its George Washington's home in Virginia, or Montecello, the estate designed and built by Thomas Jefferson, the buildings associated with America's founding fathers have a special significance for its citizens.

Malcolm Bilings looks at the roots of American patriotism, which he says, borrows from the characteristics of Christianity. Places have become shrines and heroes' fame reaches epic proportions.
