China's one-child policy has had a profound effect on the relationships between parents and children.
The policy, which restricts families in the cities to one child only, has also impacted on the status of women, education, traditional Chinese values and urban planning.
In this week's Crossing Continents, Marijke Van Der Meer of Radio Netherlands Worldwide hears from the first generation of young adults to be the product of this one-child policy.
How do they view their upbringing, compared with that of their parents?
And how do they see their futures, now that they are reaching an age when they may have children of their own?
BBC Radio 4's Crossing Continents was broadcast on Thursday, 16 August 2007 at 1102 BST.
It will be repeated on Monday, 20 August at 2030
