Millions of Angolans have been displaced over the years

BBC Radio 4's Crossing Continents was broadcast on Thursday, 21 October, 2004 at 1100 BST.

The programme was repeated on Monday, 25 October, 2004 at 2030 BST.

All across Angola, families separated by decades of war are setting out to trace missing loved ones.

It is not an easy task in a country that is twice the size of France, with a third of its population displaced and its roads still riddled with mines.

But they have help, thanks in part to the International Red Cross and to a hugely popular TV show.

Andrew Jeffrey set out to hear their stories.

Producer: Candace Piette
Presenter: Andrew Jeffrey
