BBC Radio 4's Crossing Continents: A state ill at ease Thursday 26 December 2002 on BBC Radio 4 at 1100 GMT. The programme was repeated Monday 30 December 2002 on BBC Radio 4 at 2030 GMT

In the bars and underground magazines of San Francisco, there is political unease!

California seems to be out of step with the rest of the USA.

The state is becoming increasingly liberal and sceptical of the Bush administration.

In the recent elections it voted overwhelmingly Democratic, and bucked the national trend.

Julian Pettifer explores the changes which mean that California is once again the USA's most progressive outpost.

He meets the characters and activists who are part of this liberal trend.

Travelling across the north of California, he visits some of the new communities who are taking things into their own hands.
