Dignity: Right to life
The BBC's Edward Stourton examines dignity and the right to life as part of a documentary series examining human rights in contemporary Europe.
These stories have a common theme - our search for an ethic of life and death amid the bewildering choices which science is opening up. Can the Charter of Fundamental Right that has been drawn up in Brussels ever replace the timeless truths claimed by religion? And in a secular Europe, who decides the rights and responsibilities that human dignity demands?
The story of a childless couple from Germany, who hope that genetic testing will help them to have the child that they have always longed for.
The people of the tiny island of Gozo bury the conjoined twin who died so that her sister might live.
And an undertaker in the East End of London takes orders from the customers who want their bodies frozen when they die, in the hope that they can one day be brought back to life.
