Asking the crowd to give a little money to get ideas off the ground is one web phenomenon that has quickly gained traction.

Charities, NGOs and even UN agencies are adopting similar methods and as David Reid reports, they are not just changing the way people give but also defining the relationship between donors and those who receive aid.
