Apollo Lunar Surface Journal

How many of you wanted - or still want - to be an astronaut. I quite fancied it for a while, but frankly could not find a space suit that suited me. Well, I have found a site that gives a real flavour of what it was like to be there - pictures and all.

It is part of the history section of the terrific Nasa website and is a fascinating archive of the Apollo Moon landings.

But this is not some glossy site with stirring tales of derring do - it is a fascinating delve into the realities of getting to the moon. It has moon rocket manuals, sound clips and bits of video of the first men to the moon.

As you can see this is not a place of fantastic design but given that you have access to pictures like the one taken from Apollo 13 just before the side of the command module blew away after an explosion - who needs fantastic design?

Those of you who have seen the film Apollo 13 know the story - but on the site is a transcript of the mission where you can read the conversations between a crew in a crippled space craft and the guys on earth trying to get them home - it's absolutely fascinating. By the way, that is a 20 megabyte download so be careful there.

On a lighter note there is also the transcript, audio recordings and video of the Apollo 11 moon landing. You could easily loose an afternoon here.

Holly's Inbox

The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

Here is a site that I want to share with you because it is unusual and that is what the web is all about.

For want of a better name it is an email novel. It is the inbox of the vaguely useless Holly who has just started as a receptionist at a bank - and you watch her life through her emails. The trials and tribulations of her life make this the first email soap opera, and it is quite compulsive.

The site works in real time from nine to five UK time as if she were at her desk and the current news stories are somewhat shoe horned into her life - just to remind us that its happening now.

If you want to learn more about Holly there are some forums on the site where fans can chat to each other. You have to register to chat on the forums and they are not moderated so expect them to reflect their adult users.

Despite the site being nicely designed I had one or two problems navigating around it, I got the impression that some of the links were not quite finished - but who knows they may have fixed it by the time you get there - and because it is effectively a novel I have no idea how long it will last so get there quick if you are interested.

Pencil Portraits

The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

Pencil Portraits is a fascinating site that shows you how to draw well, portraits - and to prove it, there are a selection on show.

And when you have tired with the pictures of the stars you are ready to proceed and make your own.

Across the top of the page are the various sections that you need to master. Down the left side of the page is another list of headings where you would expect to go to further sections - but in fact takes you to Amazon where you are invited to buy books on the subject.

I am guessing the click throughs to Amazon are part of the sites funding but, well, I think it could be done better.

The drawing instructions on the other hand are very very good. Starting with the Materials button it walks you through what you need.

The Shading section is fantastic and I recommend it to anyone who uses a pencil whether you do portraits or not.

Lastly it builds to a step through demo of how to go about producing a perfect picture.

Make 'Em Laugh

The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

Now on the very same site, I found this and if you are looking at the pictures, well you should definitely check it out.

From the main page click on Monologues and you go directly to the main part of the site, which is called Make 'Em Laugh and it is a collection - a big collection - of comedy sketches and monologues from yesteryear, and if you do not laugh at least once well, there is something wrong with you - seriously.

My favourite is a toss up between The Driving Instructor by Bob Newhart and Who's On Next by Abbott and Costello - if you do not know them, check them out.
