Click Essentials: Desktops

Vista and Mac users enjoy snazzy looking desktops with flashy animated windows. But if you are still using Windows XP you to can brighten up your desktop and make it look a whole lot more interesting. Here is our guide to customising your desktop.

  • To kick off, right click on an empty bit of your desktop and select properties. This opens the display properties window which contains the following options; themes, desktop, screen saver, appearance and settings - this is the engine room for all of your desktop tweaks.

Themes can be anything from backgrounds to new sounds and icons. XP comes with a selection of default themes, you can try any of these out but if you really want to get adventurous there are a number of online theme options available to download for free.

Here is an important piece of information - save your current desktop settings by clicking the save as button - this means you can immediately go back to your old settings if things get out of hand.

  • Now we can redecorate, it is time to get rid of that boring old wallpaper. From the display properties window select desktop, again here there is a selection of default wallpaper options. But by selecting browse you can open images from other locations on your hard drive.

If you want to make the new image fill the whole screen select position and then hit stretch.

You can also customise and arrange the way in which the desk top icons appear from here.

  • Now our desktops are looking smarter, let us take things a step further by introducing some widgets - also known as gadgets - these are small desktop accessories which display specific information on screen.

Widgets can provide all kinds of useful info from the latest news reports to the weather and they are a quick and easy way of checking out useful info at a glance.

  • There are a wide variety of widgets available online from different suppliers including Yahoo and Google.

Because widgets are so small wherever you decide to download them from they will need another application to make them run.

  • To run more widgets browse the widget installer or if your looking for something specific just hit search and enter the type of accessory you are after.
