    The England Football Coach, Sven Goran Eriksson, told Sir David that he has no intention of quitting the England and joining Manchester United.

    The Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Charles Kennedy, accused the Home Secretary, David Blunkett, of being "dangerously illiberal" and "irresponsible" in his approach to anti-terrorism legislation.

    The Defence Secretary, Geoff Hoon, confirmed that Britain would take very seriously any UN request to lead the proposed "stabilization" force in Afghanistan.

    The Chairman of troubled life assurer Equitable Life, Vanni Treves, told Sir David that the future would be "very unpleasant" if policyholders reject his proposed "compromise" solution.

    The new Finance Minister of the Afghan interim Government, Hedayat Amin-Arsala called on the international community to help rebuild his shattered country.
