Stuart Rose, chief executive of M&S
We put some of your questions to the boss
A late surge of Christmas shoppers has confounded predictions of a sales slump on the High Street.

One of the big winners seems to have been Marks and Spencers, which has announced a big increase in profits this morning.

Only a few years ago, the retail chain looked in real danger of being taken over, as clothing sales hit the doldrums.

Now, it seems that it's back in fashion with its core market: women aged around 50.

Clothing sales - which had been flat-lining until recently - were up 7% in the three months to Christmas.

This morning on Breakfast:

  • We talked to the Chief Executive of M&S, Stuart Rose.

"We're not out of hospital, but we are out of intensive care," he told us.

He also promised more environmentally-friendly devices, such as wind turbines outside M&S stores.
