Steve Coogan talks about his new series on Breakfast

Steve Coogan, the creator of Alan Partridge joined us on Breakfast to talk about his new series Saxondale.

Coogan plays the part of Tommy Saxondale, an ex roadie with anger management issues and his own pest control business in Stevenage.

Saxondale, as a character couldn't be further away from Partridge. Steve says the joke with Partridge was always at Alan's expense, whereas Tommy is genuinely witty.

Steve told Breakfast: "There is a lot more maturity about him. He is more likeable than Alan Partridge. He does read books and newspapers with long words.

"He is quite verbose. You wouldn't want to get stuck in a lift with him"

Over the seven episodes of Saxondale, Tommy almost befriends a celebrity, kneecaps a hippy and experiments with women's makeup.

Steve said it had been difficult moving away from the character of Alan Partridge, but he was keen to do something different.

"I wanted to come back and do something new. It is difficult trying to move away from doing something you have done before," he said.

The first episode of Saxondale can be seen tonight at 10pm on BBC2.
