"So here it is, merry Christmas..."
Noddy Holder in the Breakfast studio
Noddy: a Christmas institution
It has to be one of the most popular songs at Christmas parties all over the UK.

Every year, Noddy Holder's slightly brash voice can be heard belting out the words to Merry Xmas Everybody.

It was a hit for Holder's band in 1973 storming into the charts, and straight to number one.

The song stayed at the top of the charts of five weeks - and the last two were after Christmas.

  • Noddy Holder was Breakfast's guest today

Noddy Holder's contribution to the music industry was recognised in 2000 when he was honoured with an MBE.

His professional career spans 30 years and has no doubt been helped by the annual re-emergence of Merry Christmas Everybody.

Speaking on Breakfast, Noddy said the song was like a 'little pension plan' for him, and people always sing the lyrics to him when he's out and about.
