The threat of terrorism at home
Breakfast's discussion on homeland security
Soldiers in tanks patrolling at Heathrow airport
The world's attention may be focussed on events in Iraq, but now more than ever there is a potential risk of terrorism at home.

There is no real evidence of panic buying or of people rushing to tape up their windows, but there is some concern about the risk of homeland security.

  • On Breakfast we discussed the issue of homeland security with our correspondent Frank Gardner and Bill Durodie, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Defence Studies.

We asked has the threat of terrorism increased since the start of the war and how ready are we if there is an attack?

  • The Royal Society of Medicine is holding a conference today that will look at how we would cope if there was a bioterrorism attack in the UK.

  • The Home Office says that there is no such thing as a standard terrorist attack, but if there is an incident people should "go in, stay in and tune in."

  • On the subject of buying respirators or chemical protection suits, the advice is simply that there is no need to do this at the moment.

  • Travel shouldn't be affected by a perceived threat or terrorism - the Home Office says we have lived with the threat for 30 years and have built up good contingency plans.

The Home Office recently launched a website which has detailed advice and information about terrorism.
