Should gay couples be allowed to adopt?
Adoption graphic from BBC Breakfast
most adoptions are by married couples
Plans to open up adoption to unmarried couples, including homosexual men and lesbians have been stalled by a vote in the House of Lords.

This morning on Breakfast, we looked at the pros and cons of adoption.

  • We asked for your views: can only married couples provide the stability which children in care need - or are we being too narrow-minded?

  • We also talked to a lesbian woman who has two adopted children and one adult foster child
    Josette Bohan
Josette's name alone is on the adoption papers

Josette Bohan told us how the current adoption rules had affected her - because her partner's name cannot appear on the adoption paperwork.

"Everything I have done is as a single parent," she said. "We have none of the security of a married couple."

One of her children was particularly worried when Josette was ill recently. "She was terrified that if anything happened to me, she would be back to square one."

Many children in care are intensely aware of the adoption process, she explained, by the time they reach eight or 10.

She added: "You have to be very committed to those children. You have to give up a lot in your life - and you do it with great pleasure."
