Mental Health Bill
AIM
The bill intends to strengthen protection for those with serious mental health problems.

This bill will update the Mental Health Act 1983.

There will also be changes to the Mental Capacity Act to bring within mental health legislation the safeguards to protect the liberty of those with a mental disorder.

MAIN PROVISIONS
  • Introduction of a Supervised Community Treatment to ensure that those patients discharged from compulsory treatment continue to have treatment and so do not relapse
  • A new, simpler definition of mental disorder
  • Safeguards for those who lack capacity and are deprived of their liberty wil be brought inside Mental Health legislation
