Jump in UK businesses online
British businesses are becoming aware of the Internet's powers
The number of British businesses logging on to the Internet has increased by 40% in 1997.
More than 85% of firms believe that information and communications technologies are important for business competitiveness. These are among the findings of research during last year and compiled in a report 'Moving into the Information Age - International Benchmarking Study 1988'. But UK companies with under 100 staff do not seem as ready to move into the multimedia age, being less likely to have their own Website or use e-mail.
"It highlights the strengths and weaknesses in the UK position, and outlines how the use of information and communication technologies has developed over the past year. "Although the US and Japan come out on top in most areas, they are closely followed by the UK and Germany, while France remains consistently behind." The study is published as part of DTI Information Society Initiative Programme for Business. |
