Finance Minister Peter Robinson has resigned from Castlereagh Borough Council after 30 years.

The DUP deputy leader said he would seek the co-option of Lawrence Walker to replace him.

Mr Walker is a former local government officer with experience in the leisure sector and was an Irish League football manager.

Mr Robinson said as finance minister he did "not believe that it is appropriate that I remain in local government".

He added: "I started my political life in local government and I have found my period in council most rewarding and dare I say enjoyable. I will miss it very much."
