The Duchess of Cornwall has met models taking part in a "rubbish" catwalk show - they were all wearing dresses made from recycled bottles and drinks cans.

The display, in the Brazilian city of Manaus, was a far cry from the fashion shows she sees in Paris and Milan.

The models were all young people from the poorest parts of Manaus.

Prince Charles and Camilla were in the Amazon's largest city during their five-day state visit to Brazil.

The event was held at the Musical Centre for Art and Education in the deprived Grand Circular area of Manaus.

Drugs and violence

The centre runs numerous projects intended to keep children off the street.

It has been supported by the British Embassy in Brazil which has provided funds to buy musical instruments for the youngsters.

A spokesman for the centre said: "The main idea of the institution is to take the children from the street where they can become involved in things like drugs and violence.

"Schools here finish very early - a day lasting less than four hours - and many young people find themselves on the street. So our main idea is to give them the opportunity to grow and take them away from the violence and the drugs."

Camilla has been touring the country with her husband, Prince Charles, who was named "Friend of the Forest" by the governor of the Amazonas state for his campaigning on ecological issues.
