Two Palestinian militants have been killed by Israeli tank fire in northern Gaza, Palestinian sources say.

Medics in the Palestinian territory say the men were hit by an Israeli shell in a Hamas-run enclave near Jabaliya.

The Israeli military says a patrol fired at a group of Palestinians seen planting a bomb at the Gaza border.

Hamas claims one of its fighters was among the dead. The other man was said to belong to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP)

Hamas has identified its dead member as 21-year-old Abed Hafiz al-Silawi.

The incident came several hours after Israeli state radio said two rockets were fired overnight into Israel from inside Gaza, without causing injury or damage.

The attack comes as President Barack Obama is set to meet on Tuesday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, in an attempt to re-launch peace talks.
